Why Is My French Drain Not Working? Signs Your Yard Drainage Needs Repair.
You paid to have drainage installed. The yard was dug up, the pipe went in, and you expected the water problem to be handled.
Then it rained—and the puddle came back.
Before paying for another drain, find out why the existing system isn’t doing its job. A blockage, damaged pipe, unsuitable discharge route, or a system that misses the source of the water can produce similar symptoms. The right repair depends on identifying the cause.
Drainage Solutions LLC evaluates existing drainage systems across Memphis and North Mississippi, including systems installed by other contractors.
First, Identify What Was Installed
Homeowners often call any buried drainage system a French drain. But different systems collect water in different ways.
A French drain generally uses perforated pipe within a gravel-filled trench to collect water from the surrounding soil. A catch basin collects surface runoff through a grate. A buried downspout line carries water from the roof.
Your property may have several of these connected together. Knowing what the system is supposed to collect helps us determine why water is still standing.
The Inlet May Be Clear While the Line Is Blocked
Removing leaves from a grate is a useful first step. It doesn’t tell you whether the buried pipe is clear.
Sediment, debris, roots, or damage may interfere with flow farther along the system. Warning signs can include water backing up around a basin or downspout connection while little water appears at the outlet.
Those observations help guide the evaluation. They don’t establish the cause on their own.
The Water Needs a Suitable Discharge Route
A drainage system needs somewhere for collected water to go.
We look at the outlet’s location, condition, and elevation, along with what happens there during rain. An obstructed outlet or one affected by standing water can limit the system’s performance.
If you don’t know where your drain discharges, tell us. Tracing the existing route may be part of understanding the problem.
The System May Be Missing the Water
A drain can be installed near a puddle without intercepting the runoff that creates it.
Water might travel across a higher section of the yard, discharge from roof downspouts, or collect in a separate depression. If that water doesn’t reach the drain’s collection area, adding more pipe to the same location may not address the problem.
We follow the water across the property before recommending changes.
Grading and Pipe Condition Matter
The surrounding ground affects how water reaches the system. The buried pipe’s elevation and condition affect how it travels toward discharge.
Settled ground, crushed pipe, separated connections, or sections that retain water may interfere with performance. Changes to landscaping can also alter the route water takes through the yard.
An evaluation helps determine which conditions are present and what work is justified.
Do You Need a Repair or a Different Drainage Plan?
An existing system doesn’t automatically need to be replaced.
Depending on what we find, the work may involve clearing an obstruction, repairing a connection, replacing a damaged section, adjusting an inlet, or improving discharge.
Other properties need changes to grading or water collection. Some need a combination of corrections.
We’ll explain what we found, what the proposed work addresses, and which parts of the existing system can remain in use.
What to Send Us Before the Evaluation
If the problem appears during rain, take a short video from a safe, sheltered location. Show:
Where water enters the affected area
Where it collects
Any basins or downspouts that back up
The outlet, if you know its location
Include your address and anything you know about the installation: when it was completed, what was installed, and whether it ever worked as expected.
That history can help distinguish a recent failure from a problem the system never fully addressed.
